Popular Art for the People

By popular demand, John Stoa is returning to Eassie for a second, one day art class following the success of one in April.

The next class is to be held in Eassie and Nevay Hall at Balkeerie, 10 am – 4 pm, Saturday, 11th June, 2011. The class fee, £20, includes a light lunch provided in the hall.

Organiser Andrew Brewster said, “The format is extremely relaxed; John Stoa gives a brief introduction to various styles of art and media. Participants are free to paint or draw their own choice of subject, under the guidance of John Stoa. Students are expected to bring their own equipment and media, including paint, brushes and photographs of the subject they want to work on; materials such as paper are available.”

ENKCA Plant Stall

ENKCA’s peripatetic plant stall has arisen from its winter dormancy once more is now parked outside Sandy Patullo’s Asparagus Shop at Eassie, by courtesy of Sandy and Heather.

The unseasonably, and welcome, warm weather has enabled an early opening to the stall and so far it is focussing on the sale of fresh rhubarb - £1 for a generous kilo.

We hope to have more plants and produce as the season advances.

We're having a hustings!

Eassie, Nevay and Kirkinch Community Association (ENKCA) ventures into a new area this week.

In advance of the forthcoming Scottish parliamentary election, candidates representing the four main parties will be at the hustings in the new Eassie and Nevay hall at Balkeerie, on Tuesday April 26^th.

Hustings chairman, John Duffy of Balkeerie, said, "This is a great event to have in the area and an opportunity to bring the wider community of Angus South into our new hall. The event will be an ideal opportunity for people in the area to meet the parties and to ask questions on the subjects that are important to them. The candidates of the four main parties will be present on the night. This is an ideal opportunity for local people to speak to the politicians and to put their questions to them. The night will work best if there is a good turn out from the community and a wide range of views are represented.

“The hustings is a very traditional form of election event where the candidates face direct questioning from the electorate. Prior to the days of televised debates, this was how politicians went about getting elected, by getting out into communities, speaking to people and taking part in this form of debate.”

For straight talking on current issues, the place to be is the Eassie and Nevay hall, Balkeerie, Tuesday 26^th April, at 7.00pm; no entry charge, refreshments will be available. All welcome.

HOGMANAY BASH!

Eassie, Nevay and Kirkinch Community Association is looking forward, beyond Christmas, to its first social gathering in the newly built Village Hall at Balkeerie.

After years of hard work raising money to build the hall, the community plans to celebrate with a Hogmanay Bash for adults and children. The event promises a traditional hogmanay - without the endurance trial that domestic first footing would entail in the current weather conditions.

ENKCA Chairman, Stuart Wright, said, “The Hogmanay Bash will be a well deserved opportunity for the community to relax and enjoy the new Village Hall after all the hard work of years of fundraising.”

Hogmanay Bash starts at 7.30 pm on Friday 31st December and goes on to 1.00 am Jan 1st. There will be dancing to live music, a piper to play at the bells and bring in the New Year, children's party games, raffles for adults and for children and a whisky challenge; stovies will be served to revellers.

Winter Festival

We look forward to welcoming a number of new faces to our annual Winter Festival.

The immensely popular and completely unique event features a day of live music and song, book signings by local authors and a busy gift fair with activities for children, all accompanied by an all day café in the new Village Hall at Balkeerie on Saturday 20th November, 10 am – 4 pm.

ENKCA hall project manager Michael Ryan said, “We are absolutely delighted that the contractors expect to hand over our new hall in time to let us hold the festival in our own building on our own patch for the first time. There will be a lot of work putting our furnishings in place in time for the event but it will be a pleasure to see everything up and running on the day.“

“We are looking forward to a high standard of entertainment. Sandy Ingram and friends are joining us for the first time; John Tylor Thomson, author of "Drinking The Wind," who rode in the first Trans Scotland 200 miles Endurance Ride, is a new literary figure for us and the ever popular Jim Broon, our own multi talented musician and author brings a following where ever he appears. On the sales floor we have 22 stalls booked from returning favourites and new traders. We are very pleased to welcome Memus Community hall’s stall. We have had the benefit of their support in the past and there is great potential for the future when rural communities support each other’s efforts.“

The stalls in the gift fair include arts & crafts, foods, books, Christmas gifts, calendars, cards, CDs, jewellery, soaps, bags, scarves, candles, vintage items, woodcraft, hampers, toys and tombola and feature a high proportion of locally crafted goods. Youngest stallholder is 10 year old, Seonaid Durston, who is running a stall in aid of Children in Need, with a “Build a Bear" Pudsey prize, worth £24.50, bought with her own pocket money.

The festival promises a relaxed day out for any age or gender. Weary – or reluctant – shoppers can rest in the Café and enjoy tea, coffee, traybakes, filled rolls and soup and listen to – or participate in - the varied entertainment. Pocket money stalls and an activity zone for children will distract youngsters from their parents’ festive purchases.

Admission is free of charge.

Yoga Classes will resume on Tuesday 7th September and Wednesday 8th September in The Masonic Hall, Glamis, with tuition by Shona Wallace of Kirriemuir.
Classes costs £4 per session, £20 prepaid for block of 5 classes.

Tuesday class from 6.15 pm to 7.45 pm (Hall opens at 6 pm)
This class is full, with a waiting list for places.

Wednesday class from 1.15 pm to 2.45 pm (Hall opens at 1 pm)

Meet at Eassie Church at 9.00am and taking transport, be dropped off at the layby up Lumley Den. From there, we climb the fence and walk up to Craigowl, on to Balluderon Hill, Auchterhouse Hill and then down Denoon Glen to Wester Denoon. Cars will then take us back to the Church for approximately 2.30pm where some refreshments will await us.
Walking boots, waterproofs and a packed lunch should be brought.

Green Fingers and Coffee Cups

If the May Holiday gave you time to look at the gaps in your garden, this weekend will give you the chance to fill them - at ENKCA Plant Sale on Saturday 8th May 2010, 10-12 noon, in Eassie School, at Balkeerie.

You can fulfill your need for refreshment with home made baking and fresh pancakes, cooked while you wait, at the Coffee Morning which runs alongside the horticultural event.

Plant sale organiser, Marianne Jenkins said, “The annual ENKCA plant sale has a great reputation and this year we have a number of new features. Our old hall has been demolished, in preparation for the building of the new Hub and the plans will be on display for public scrutiny. In addition to the plant sale, which includes bedding plants, young trees, herbs, bulbs and perennials, ENKCA has a sales table, raffle and a promotion of the ENKCA 50/50 lottery. The event is a real community effort with Eassie Kirk running the coffee morning, the WRI organising the cake and candy stall, and Eassie School with the tombola.”

The Eassie, Nevay & Kirkinch Community Association’s Traditional Moroccan Buffet evening, at Mervat’sVillage Gallery and Restaurant in Meigle on Thursday 18th June was a great success. So much so that it was sold out in just two days and David Lawrence, its organiser, has decided to arrange another one for Thursday 6th August.

Eassie School Parent Council has called a meeting to discuss action to deal with Angus Council’s plan to hold a Formal Consultation over the future of Eassie School.

Closure threat to Eassie School

Angus Council intends to close Eassie Primary School by the end of this term. The council will vote on the closure in approx 5 weeks time.

There is to be a Parent Council meeting on Monday, 21st April, at 8pm, at the school

Parent Council is keen to have as great an input from the community as possible, so EVERYONE IS WELCOME

Ann Durston says, “Everyone who has the slightest concern about our community should try to attend. If they cannot attend but want to help please forward an email address so that we can keep them in the loop.”

8,000 Mile Mongol Rally

Eleanor and Martin Gledhill of Forfar entered the Mongol Rally last year and drove 8,720 miles through Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan and Siberia to Mongolia.

2,000 miles of the journey were off road, but they had no 4x4 - just an eleven year old Fiat Punto to cross the Gobi desert ! Relying on sign language and diagrams, they had to ask for tows across land and water in underdeveloped territories.

Come to the Community Hall at Balkeerie Wednesday 19th March at 7.30 pm to hear Martin and Eleanor Gledhill’s adventures and see their images of the trans continental Mongol Rally and life in Ulaan Baatar. All Welcome Admission £2.

Festive Fayre

It is that time of year again. Trying to buy Christmas presents early and short of ideas. Why not come along to the ENKCA Festive Fayre on Saturday 17th November 2007.
It runs from 10am until 3pm and if you fancy dropping in for lunch the renowned Balkeerie Cafe will be open with a range of delicious soups, bottomless cups of tea or coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches, cakes and preserves on sale. Best of all admission is free.

Anyone who has visited our previous events will tell you that it is the ideal venue to buy unusual and even unique Christmas presents for family and friends from one of the numerous interesting stalls. There will also be a range of other attractions including a festive bottle stall, and if you have donations for this they will be gratefully accepted (bring them along on the day or contact Linda Breckenridge (0130 784 0323) or Miriam Cosgrove (01828 640 389).

One highlight of the day will be the launching of our own range of celebrity cosmetics (well - a bar of soap). 'JB Farmers Soap' has been designed by David and Ann Thorpe of Thistle Soaps in Charleston and tested on the once grimy but now delicately fragranced hands of local farmers.
Made with Olive oil, Shea butter and essential oils with the added ingredient of pumice to remove the stubborn stains from hardworking hands, it promises to be a big hit with anyone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty, but likes to get them clean with the minimum of effort.
David and Ann have kindly offered to sell the soap nation-wide and for each bar sold the Community Hall fund will benefit.

You also have the opportunity to feed the birds if not for 2p a bag then at least . . . . cheep-ly . . . as bird ringing experts, Tay Ringing Group, will be selling a range of best quality, toxin free seeds suitable for feeding your wild birds or red squirrels this winter, and at economical prices. Family Quiz Night

Prospective Masterminds, Eggheads and Strongest Links are challenged to pit their wits at Balkeerie where the Community hall is due to host another of its popular Family Quiz Nights on Friday 19th October in aid of Eassie, Nevay and Kirkinch Community Association’s (ENKCA’s) fund to rebuild the hall.

ENCKA’s unique family format reverses the usual practice of adults being obliged to attend to children alongside other duties; instead, primary school aged children complete ten rounds of the junior quiz, which includes a picture question in each round, while issuing and collecting quiz sheets for the adult quiz, another ten round effort.

Doors open at 7 pm for team registration of adult teams of up to four people and  contestants are advised to arrive early to secure a table. Children’s teams will be arranged ad hoc, on the night. Quizzing starts at 7.30pm.

Sandwiches, tea, coffee and biscuits are included in the entrance fee of £3.50 per adult, £1.50 per primary school aged child.  The evening includes a licensed bar and a raffle.

Jog Scotland

Jogging classes are proving popular with all participants over a wide age range who are improving at their own pace by working to a Jog Scotland programme.

The classes at present are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings but, as the seasons change, daytime and weekend classes will run with an opportunity for new members to join.

Gavin Robertson of Robertson's Dairy, Balkeerie generously sponsored the group with bright red tee-shirts.

All members of the group are to be praised for making the effort in following the programme.

Many with no previous jogging experience are now feeling the benefit, looking trimmer feeling fitter and can be seen jogging confidently around the community in their cheerful tee-shirts.

Hatha Yoga re-starts tomorrow

Yoga classes start in ENKCA Community Hall at Balkeerie tomorrow, Monday 20th August 2007 at 6.15pm and finish about 745pm.

The Hatha yoga taught by Shona Wallace is easy to follow working to one own ability
The emphasis is on enjoyable stretching exercises for self improvement ..... with the most popular part being the relaxation at the end!

A great stress buster, helps improve sleeps and creaking joints and is recommended for overall general well being
Pilates classes follow similar exercises.

The classes generally run from August until April following school term holidays

Cost £4 per class ( for beginners to come and try)
(£20 block booking preferred if a regular to ensure classes can run covering costs of tutor and hall heating )

Advised accessories:
Loose layers of warm clothing (e.g. joggers t shirt and/or sweatshirt etc)
Exercise mat /blanket and a cover(blanket/sleeping bag to snuggle under for relaxation)
